2nd SA TB Conference, 2010

2010 Conference Chairperson
Prof Harry Hausler
Theme:"Forging community partnerships to fight TB and HIV"
Message from the Chair

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to attend the South African TB Conference 2010. As a result of the growing prevalence of HIV, South Africa and the southern African region are facing one of the worst TB epidemics on the planet. In its latest Global TB Report 2009, the World Health Organization estimated that South Africa has the fifth highest number of TB cases and the second highest TB incidence of any country in the world.

The TB Conference will be a forum for people of diverse backgrounds, experiences and skills to come together to review the evidence and to debate and develop innovative approaches to fight the TB epidemic in the era of HIV. The theme of the conference will be "forging community partnerships to fight TB and HIV".This will highlight two central strategies. The first is the involvement of communities in prevention, case finding and case holding activities. The second is the provision of integrated TB and HIV services. In most of southern Africa, more than half of TB patients are living with HIV. To avoid missed opportunities and improve the quality of care, TB and HIV services should be integrated in health facilities and communities.

Those who will benefit from attending this conference include researchers, programme managers, implementers, people working in civil society organizations, clinicians, patients, community members and all people who feel they have something to learn or contribute in the efforts to decrease the burden of TB in 2010 and beyond. South Africa is preparing to host the world at the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The public health community must seize this opportunity to reach out to sports fans with health messages and health services. As part of the theme of forging community partnerships to fight TB and HIV, all conference participants will be challenged to demonstrate how they have linked with the World Cup in their home countries or in South Africa to educate the public about TB, find new TB cases or keep TB patients on treatment. I welcome you in advance to the rainbow nation and look forward to a conference that will empower delegates and communities to fight TB in the era of HIV

Warm regards Prof Harry Hausler
Medical Director, TB Care Association

3rd TB SA Conference 2012

2012 Conference Chairperson
Dr Martie van der Walt
Theme:"Reaching the target: TB/HIV integration"
Message from the Chair

It is an honour and a privilege to invite you to the 3rd TB Conference of South Africa. The rate of TB infection is on the rise. To add to this challenge, the TB epidemic is fuelled by high HIV co-infection rates and compounded by drug-resistant forms of the disease. Despite this, advances have been made in tuberculosis control as well as knowledge sharing and TB awareness. These successes have stemmed from the 2008 and 2010 TB Conferences, which provided a platform for TB/HIV communities to interact, learn and showcase the best-practises that contributed to the positive gains.

As is known by many, TB is a disease which roots in the social structures of societies. This conference will therefore, not only be about science. The Organising Committee is already working hard to bring to you an exciting and original social programme. As in the past, the conference will have three tracks, namely Basic Science; Clinical, Epidemiological and Operational Research and Patient and Civil Society Mobilisation and Advocacy.

Join us from 12-15 June 2012. Watch this space for updates on important dates for registration and abstract submissions.

Please join fellow South Africans, working in communities, health facilities, policy and science in embracing this opportunity for reaching the targets!

Yours sincerely Dr Martie van der Walt
